The
idea to set up an outside studio came to me whilst looking in wonder
at Irving Penns book 'Worlds in a Small Room'. His dream was to document
the disappearing tribes people of the world. He says 'the most surprising
and fascinating fact was that taking people out of their natural circumstances
and putting them in front of a camera did not simply isolate them,
it transformed them.
I
capture the ordinary people living in Derby City.
My sitters enter the outside studio and bathed by natural light take
ownership of the chair and a command of the lense. Their concentration
and seriousness fills the pictures with a profound sense of place
and self.
